Cycling in Cape Peninsula

17 August 2011 Categories: Journal, Trekking South Africa

Spend a morning cycling through some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.

The day will start early and we will meet in the village of Scarborough at 8am for a coffee and briefing, then depending on weather conditions and the level of fitness of the group we will decide on a suitable route.

We know some stunning routes along this stretch of coast as well as in the nature reserve where you can see many different kinds of antelopes, ostriches and baboons.

You will also cycle along beautiful, quiet roads with amazing views across both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.  We will return to Scarborough by 1pm and you will be treated to a fabulous lunch on the spectacular lawns of Zensa Lodge.

Trekking Eilat

Solo trekking around Eilat’s Mountains.

The hike was about 5 hours long and included a peak of a small mountain with great views over the city,  Red sea, and Aqaba—the Jordanian city next to Eilat – Israel.

Most of the trail was through extremely barren desert–there was not a tree or even a bush in sight most of the time. There were a couple of birds but no other signs of life. I think of hiking as primarily exercise but being in the wilderness can bring a deep relaxation that doesn’t seem to be available in Eilat. The aesthetic appeal of the route is a bonus. I saw into Jordan and may have seen into Saudi Arabia and were a few kilometers from Egypt.

Trekking Rwanda

Nyungwe Forest is a high-altitude, mountainous rainforest in southern Rwanda established as a forest reserve in 1933 , is one of the largest mountainous rainforests remaining in Africa. Just recently the Nyungwe forest received National Park status, making it East Africa’s largest protected high-altitude rainforest.Nyungwe’s biodiversity is astonishing by African standards and is one of the most endemic species-rich areas in all of Africa. Along with its biodiversity, Nyungwe is an important water catchment for Rwanda and contains many natural resources integral to Rwanda’s human populations. Rwanda ( land of a thousand hills) is also in one of the most heavily populated areas of Africa.

Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes. It lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda .The lake covers a total surface area of some 2,700 km2 and stands at a height of 1,460 metres above sea level. Lake Kivu is one of known exploding lakes, that experience violent lake overturns. Analysis of Lake Kivu’s geological history indicates sporadic massive biological extinction on millennial timescales. The trigger for lake overturns in Lake Kivu’s case is unknown but volcanic activity is suspected. Lake Kivu’s case, methane and carbon dioxide due to lake water interaction with a volcano. The amount of methane is estimated to be 65 cubic kilometers (if burnt over one year, it would give an average power of about 100 gigawatts for the whole period). There is also an estimated 256 cubic kilometers of carbon dioxide. The methane is reported to be produced by microbial reduction of the volcanic CO2.The risk from a possible Lake Kivu overturn would be catastrophic, because of the approximately two million people living in the lake basin.

Kibuye is one of the most beautiful places in Rwanda with gorgeous views on Lake Kivu. Kibuye was home to some of the worst atrocities of the Genocide – a visit to the church where thousands were killed is a  chilling site.

The Solo Trekking starting at Nyungwe Forest National Park ( Gisakura tea plantation ) bordering the Lake Kivu , ending in Kibuye (200 km - 7 days trek trip) was incredible and humbling experience.
